Mysteries of oxygen and insect size

چکیده
What sets the maximal size of insects? Results suggest that larger insects invest a greater fraction of their body as respiratory system (tracheal hypermetry). Simple models indicate that tracheal hypermetry prevents increases in PO2 gradients down the tracheae of larger insects. Tracheal hypermetry may lead to spatial constraints within the exoskeleton that provide a maximal limit on insect size. However, this theory must be tested by examination of the world’s largest insects, and examination of the effect of size on tracheal morphology and use of convection. Most insects exhibit developmental plasticity in response to rearing in different oxygen levels, but these plastic effects are likely due to other mechanisms such as direct effects on feeding behavior or downstream effects of oxygen-induced proteins on cell size.

Environmental and biotic controls on the evolutionary history of insect body size.
Giant insects, with wingspans as large as 70 cm, ruled the Carboniferous and Permian skies. Gigantism has been linked to hyperoxic conditions because oxygen concentration is a key physiological control on body size, particularly in groups like flying insects that have high metabolic oxygen demands. Here we show, using a dataset of more than 10,500 fossil insect wing lengths, that size tracked a...
متن کاملAtmospheric oxygen level and the evolution of insect body size.
Insects are small relative to vertebrates, possibly owing to limitations or costs associated with their blind-ended tracheal respiratory system. The giant insects of the late Palaeozoic occurred when atmospheric PO(2) (aPO(2)) was hyperoxic, supporting a role for oxygen in the evolution of insect body size. The paucity of the insect fossil record and the complex interactions between atmospheric...
متن کاملAtmospheric Hypoxia Limits Selection for Large Body Size in Insects
BACKGROUND The correlations between Phanerozoic atmospheric oxygen fluctuations and insect body size suggest that higher oxygen levels facilitate the evolution of larger size in insects. METHODS AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Testing this hypothesis we selected Drosophila melanogaster for large size in three oxygen atmospheric partial pressures (aPO(2)). Fly body sizes increased by 15% during 11 gene...
متن کاملCan Oxygen Set Thermal Limits in an Insect and Drive Gigantism?
BACKGROUND Thermal limits may arise through a mismatch between oxygen supply and demand in a range of animal taxa. Whilst this oxygen limitation hypothesis is supported by data from a range of marine fish and invertebrates, its generality remains contentious. In particular, it is unclear whether oxygen limitation determines thermal extremes in tracheated arthropods, where oxygen limitation may ...

Glutathione transferases(GSTs) are a diverse family of enzymes found ubiquitously in aerobic organisms. They play a central role in the detoxification of both endogenous and xenobiotic compounds and are also involved in intracellular transport, biosynthesis of hormones and protection against oxidative stress. Interest in insect GSTs has primarily focused on their role in insecticide resistanc...
